we survived the end of the Mayan calendar ;-) It was comical that there were rumors going around about what time the world would end LOL We wanted to go to Chichenitza for "the end", but decided to meet a dear friend at a local festival instead. I thought it was a much more cultural experience than going to another pyramid with many other tourist because the festival was created by locals and attended by locals. The organizers calculated our birthdays and told us our mayan signs and their meanings. Then, we were guided through a maze that was created on the beach with many different rooms according to the mayan signs. In each room we were meet by another person that informed us about the signs and lead us through a guided meditation that made us focus on letting go of the past, welcoming change and forging forward. It was a very enlightening and unique experience that we couldn't have gotten anywhere else! Once we were done with the tour, we realized that the various times for the "end of the world" had already passed and we were still living it up :-) We survived and were recharged for the new times ahead!

I had the best swim...
at the Tulum ruins along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula!! Where else can you swim out into the Caribbean sea and turn around to see El Castillo on 12 meters (39 feet) tall cliffs?!?? It was important for me to break away from the festival resort bubble to go visit one of the last cities built and inhabited the Mayans!! Here's Krtek taking a tour of the ruins....
Our adventures began....
with my trip down to Mexico for a music festival during the end of the Mayan calendar. Besides listening to music, I wanted a cultural experience while I was there. To prepare myself, I attended a class about the Mayan calendar at Johns Hopkins University. The professor made me realize that I had the wrong image of the mayan calendar. I always thought it was the round calendar, which is actually Aztec and isn't even a calendar. A Mayan calendar is in the shape of a stella with many calculated signs that counts down to 12/21/12 or documents a specific event that happened. The most preserved stellas are located in Coba. Here's Krtek pushing over a stella...

It all started....
when I bought Krtek, a famous Czech childhood cartoon character, while visiting my family in Czech Republic. I was inspired by my fun friend, Maggie, that got a finger puppet to keep her company for her world travels. I knew that I would be traveling and entertaining to take him along for the ride. Krtek sat in my apartment waiting for our 1st adventure....
